Should I have Adsense ads on my website?

Weve all seen the internet ads telling us that we can make millions off of Adsense. You can, if you are getting enough traffic. While I dont know anyone doing that much I do know someone who was making $7,000 a month off of Adsense ads. But is it the right way to monotenize your website.

The simple answer is that it depends. Ill discuss some of the main categories of websites that are great for Adsense and affiliate ads: article sites, review sites, general blogs, online communities and online magazines. The common denominator is that you are providing information to generate traffic. Having Adsense dish up ads makes it a simple way to make money. Affiliate links take a bit more effort but can be far more lucrative. Lets look at each type separately

Article sites:

The gentleman that I mentioned above was making most of his Adsense revenues from article sites. These are great because you are able to get articles for free from people trying to market their business. By aggregating this free niche content for the reader you are able to provide Adsense ads and generate revenues.

Review sites:

Most review sites are thinly veiled sales pages for the products theyre reviewing. This is fine if they provide an honest review but most dont. They make money by becoming affiliates for the products that they are reviewing. Other review sites allow people to leave their own reviews. These sites will generate more traffic and would make sense to have Adsense ads in addition to their affiliate links for the reviewed products.

Personal blogs:

Most blogs arent going to generate enough traffic to make much off of Adsense, but it doesnt hurt to add them. Making a couple of extra bucks a month for pontificating is fine. For those that provide real value and insight they will be able to find affiliate programs that are targeted to their reader base. Affiliate programs are generally more lucrative.

Online communities:

Online communities like Facebook and MySpace generate millions from their Adsense ads. Communities draw people back over and over. These people spend hours tweaking their sites and even though they dont click on ads very often it still rings up to a huge business.

Online magazines:

Online magazines are another type of site that is a great place for Adsense ads or affiliate links. We are using these programs to monotenize one of my clients sites, www.PieceMonthly.com. As we build our traffic up we will be able to get more targeted affiliate programs that will also be of interest to our readers.

If your website is set up to sell your own product or service like my client, www.OptimalPerformanceFitness.com you do not want to have Adsense ads on your website. You dont want to distract people from the opportunity to purchase your products. You can always have additional back-end sales but your immediate goals are to get them to buy your product or service.

I'll go into more detail on each of these types of websites in later articles.
